about

About the song:

There were two dramas going on for me when Hurricane Iniki pounced on Kauai that September 11 1992. The obvious drama of 150 mile per hour plus winds blowing everything to shreds all around you, and the inner turmoil associated with a relationship on the verge of big change. So I had a lot going on, didn't we all. Anyway it became just more grist for the mill and combined to create the perfect conditions for songwriting.

Earlier in the year my co-writer Bryan Kessler and I had gotten together a half-dozen times for song writing sessions and had come up with the music for what would be called After The Storm. We worked at it diligently, section by section, chord prgression by chord progression, until we felt we had something cool and worthy of words. We always went at it like this, each of us sharing an idea with the other and either trying it or denying it until what ever wasn't shot down stood up to the test of our hyper-critical bullshit detectors. It took a while for AT & BK to wind up with a worthy groove but it didn't ever matter 'cause no need rush a good thang and besides, we on Hawaiian time.

The music complete I flew back to Kauai to write the lyrics, but one little thing through a wrench into my writing plans, and that little thing was hurricane Iniki. Thus it would be a long while before I could get back to the point where I could sit down and finish the song because our homes and lives had to be put back in place first. But I never stopped taking it in and writing things down. Finally towards the end of the year I was able to put it all down on paper and have a complete song both words and music.

About the recording:

We recorded this one in the Kauapea Black Bamboo Studio well after the three months it took for the island to get electricity again. Bryan and I painstakingly programmed my R70 drum machine with some really nice real sounding drum parts, then one by one recorded our guitar parts. Michael Ruff came by for his singular piano parts, followed by Hawaiian Style Band basist Dave Inamine.

The following year Hawaiian Style Band recorded and released After The Storm on their second CD Rhythm Of The Ocean with Bryan and sistah Robi Kahakalau singing lead vocals.

After The Storm

words & music - Allan Thomas
music - Bryan Kessler

I opened my eyes from a night like no other
Was I dreaming or is this real
All around me everything in ruin
Gonna take some time for things to heal

After the wind and rain
Nothing gonna be the same
My whole world changed after the storm

Take something so strong
Make you feel so small
Blows away your illusions in no time at all
Nature gone insane
Homes hammered by the hurricane
And the sound of the trees breaking in two
And there's nothing you can do

After the wind and the rain
Nothing gonna feel the same
Our world changed
After the storm
After the damage was done
We were crying in the morning sun
Now its back to square one
After the storm

Who could ever forget it
When it's everywhere you turn
But life goes on you live and you learn

Starting over back on line
Picking up the pieces one day at a time
It's bringing people together
It's tearing others apart
It's a blessing in disguise or a broken heart

After the wind and rain
Nothing gonna look the same
Everybody's world changed after the storm
After the danger was done
We were crying in the morning sun
Yes its back to square one
After the storm
After the driving rain what could ever be the same
Life can be so strange after the storm
