about

About the song:

While visiting a bookstore in Los Angeles I discovered the book 'Bad Behavior' and knew instantly it was the title for a song I was planning to write with Zeke Zirngiebel. I already had the groove and was at that point of trying to figure out where the song wanted to go lyrically. I bought the book and gave it a read. It was a group of short stories about different types of women down on their luck and in pretty dark situations. I didn't use these particular women as inspiration for my song but it it got me thinking about a couple of strong-willed women I knew. I liked their "spunky demeanor" their "willingness to be different" their independance. They were the perfect models for the song and maybe the perfect material for a part-time lover, but perhaps not for a steady girlfriend or wife, unless one wanted to spend ones life wondering every second what she might be getting up to when your head is turned.

About the recording:

I met Zeke Zirngiebel through Steve Barncard when Barncard had the good sense to bring Zeke in to play electric and slide guitar on the first group of 'The Island' sessions at the aforementioned Sound Solution studios in Santa Monica. His playing was the cats meow in my opinion, and could surely have a growl and bite when needed. Did I mention how funny this dude can be? It was worth it to have him at a recording session just for the moral boost he brought with him along with his guitars and effects pedals.

He had a home recording set-up and I really don't know what the recording rig was, but he was adept at recording my electric guitar part first and then laying down all the other instruments one after the other. After he was finished with his parts I had a fun track to sing on, and Zeke recorded that as well, in maybe two takes.

Zeke Z has played with many artists including the Doobie Brothers, Tower of Power and Warren Zevon.

§ - Not long after recording Bad Behavior, and while I was still working as a tour guide for Napali Adventures, I met the author of the book that had inspired the title, Mary Gaitskill. She wound up as one of the 15 passengers on our four-hour adventure cruise down the Napali Coast. Somehow during the four-hour tour we got to talking and she her revealed her professional identity. I had to tell her about the song I wrote inspired by her book title. After much goading I convinced her to come join myself and a friend on his sailboat moored at Tunnels beach for sunset, and she did, poor thing. No it wasn't so bad, but she seemed a little rattled on the two minute ride from the beach to the sailboat and back in the small tipsy dinghy. I could see relief in her eyes as we touched on familiar terra firma.

Bad Behavior

You're minding your own business
Up comes this woman this character right out of a novel
She wants to know if you'll follow her
Into the house of dreams
She's got soft shoulders and dancing hands
She's got the tools and the talent
You weigh the possibilities
You'll take the chance and the challenge

Half the town is talking 'bout the things she do
They thinks it's bad behavior
You have to see if it's true

You call her Julianna
You like her perfume you love her chatter
You don't care what anybody thinks
Nor does she it doesn't matter
You dig her cut-rate clothes
Her nicotine patina
Her disregard for rules
Her spunky demeanor

Half the town is talking 'bout the things you do
They call it bad behavior
Bad behavior
But there's nothing wrong with you

Julianna nobody tells you
What you should or shouldn't do
Julianna

It's never dull she likes to keep it spicy
She's got the gift of gab
Especially pillow talk
She dare to be different
One of the notorious and few

The town is talking 'bout your saucy attitude
They say it's bad behavior
But that doesn't phase you
Just cheap talkin' 'bout the capers you get into
They're convinced it's bad behavior
Bad behavior
Bad behavior
Julianna I love your bad behavior
Bad behavior
