about

Bryan Kessler and I had written the music together, and I had written all but one line of the lyrics. My girlfriend Karen Keit and I, had taken a long drive up to Kokee State Park at the top of Kauai. At this point I was still missing one line in the song. After singing the lyrics to her a couple of times as we drove, she came up with the missing line “More precious than a sea of pearls”. That fit nicely, and since she was a jewelry designer who worked mainly with black pearls, the line came to her easily. I originally thought this song would be good for Bryan's hit group the Hawaiian Style Band, but as they didn’t record it, it gave me the opportunity to do so on this record.

lyrics

Island Girl

words Allan Thomas
music Allan Thomas & Bryan Kessler

A lei of tuberoses
white ginger in your hair
when you throw your arms around me
I've got it all right here.

oh island girl
my sweet island girl
you take me to another world
my island girl.

she dances in the moonlight
as the surf kisses the shore
just me and you
the wind in the bamboo
I don't need anything more.

just my island girl
my sweet island girl
you take me to another world
when I'm loving you
I love an island girl
Hawaiian island girl
more precious than a sea of pearls
my island girl

when I see you coming
it throws me for a loop
I smile like a mongoose in a chicken coop
the magic of the islands
reflecting in your eyes
just one look
I'm hypnotized

stars light up the night sky
we awaken to the sunrise
I count my blessings
when I think of you
I believe dreams come true

chorus

and when I see you coming
it throws me for a loop
I smile like a mongoose
in a chicken coop
the magic of the islands
reflecting in your eyes
just one look
I'm in paradise.
