about

‘Ka Wai Aloha’ means ‘the waters of love’. It's in a C major Hawaiian slack key tuning, and just came to me in one or two days. I try to include at least one instrumental track on a record because not only does it add dimension to the record overall, but because instrumentals can also be used in situations where vocal tunes cannot, like in film soundtracks for instance.

My buddy Jonnie Wichman – a fine musician, sailor, and all around waterman – has a house in Haena that his grandmother built many many years ago. An underground fresh water spring runs through the property and his grandmother had a small bathing pool made to catch the water, so that you could refresh yourself in it and also drink the great tasting water. The people who visited her house over the years always took home some of the water as they had come to believe that the water had healing qualities to it. The pool became known as Ka Wai Aloha.

Ken Emerson - who is playing the lead melody - is something of a virtuoso lap steel, National Steel, and Fender Strat slide guitarist. He's played with Gabby Pahinui, Todd Rundgren, Donald Fagen, Graham Nash and many others. The affable dude continues to record and tour both nationally and around all the corners of the globe.

Ka Wai Aloha was featured in the full length film 'Beyond Paradise'.
