about

'Let it Flow' was a bossa nova type groove in A minor; a tip of the hat to the music of Brazil which I so resonated with at the time. Bob Cardwell, a Chicago-born guitarist and friend was instrumental in turning me on to Brazilian guitar rhythm grooves that are plucked first thumb, then three fingers simultaneously. Later I would learn and perform the Antonio Carlos Jobim tune 'Aguas de Marzo' (Water of March) in this same mesmerizing type groove.

In those mellow days of '69 "let it flow" was a hipster's phrase like "chill out" is today. I use the analogy of planting a seed and nurturing it, in order to allow it to grow to it's fullest potential, as you would do, or hope to do, in a relationship with someone you cared about. You can see in the photo who four years previous was the inspiration for the song.

Session master George Devins played some beautiful vibes on the song, and with Jack Lee's melodic nylon string rhythm/lead part, the track flowed along pretty groovaciously. In the end I thought my vocal could have been better, but whatever, I was just twenty-two year old kid, and it was the first stop on what would become a long journey to becoming a confident vocalist in full control of his instrument.

Let It Flow

words & music - Allan Thomas

A seed was planted in my heart today
When my eyes beheld your glow
Now that seed is beginning to grow
Getting stronger with every hello
I can feel it searching for the sunshine
Which only your loving can provide
We're both beginning to need you now
But this time I'm not gonna hide

I'm gonna let it flow
Gonna let it flow

Just to watch you laugh and sing and smile
Is enough of a life giving shower
To help the seed within my heart to grow
Into a beautiful flower
With the right climate and plenty of care
I'm sure we'll be able to share
All the profits of a love-ripened harvest
That both of us helped to prepare

I'm gonna let it flow
Gonna let it flow

With the right climate and plenty of care
I'm sure we'll be able to share
All the profits of a love-ripened harvest
That both of us helped to prepare

I'm gonna let it flow flow flow
I'm gonna let it flow
Need to see our love flow
And I will wait if I have to darling
With the patience of a farmers soul
Flow gonna let it flow
And I need you like a flower needs the sunshine
Let it flow
