about

About the song:

Your lovers touch - a refuge from the storm, a sure-fire ticket to the heart of it all.

About the recording:

Singer songwriter and keyboard groovemaster Michael Ruff, had just moved to Kauai. We had already met in So Cal when he played on 'The Island', my second CD, in 1987 - 1989. I was keen to have a potential songwriting partner in the hood, as that was one of the few things lacking for me here on Kauai. Bryan Kessler, my other good buddy and sometime writing partner lived on Oahu, but it was always a bit of a hassle to fly over there and back, consequently we wrote and recorded together sporadically and I basically had to write on my own most of the time. Not that I mind writing by myself, but it's way more fun to write songs with a good partner to bounce things off of. On one of our rare and few-ever rehearsals for a weekly gig we had, Ruff played me the track. All it took was one listen, I was sufficiently moved to ask if I could come up with lyrics for it, since I gathered he hadn't gotten around to it yet. After his initial shock that someone outside his own bad-self wanted a shot at writing a lyric to one of his grooves he said go for it.

He was staying in Mombo's garage/loft on the palm ranch, I don't remember what kind of recorder he owned at the time but he did have an Akai sequencer where his drums and percussion arsenal lived. Pretty much in one couple of hour session we completed the whole recording - Mike always likes to do things off-the-cuff in these bursts of spontaneous energized inspiration. He laid down all the various bass, drum and keyboard parts, and then recorded my vocals. I think we used my gigging mic, an Electro-Voice 850 dynamic, which I happened to have in my Beamer at the time. After the lead vocals were done a take or three later, Mike asked me to play some electric guitar riffs with my Steinberger Trans-Trem. In most cases I write songs with guitar first. But with this tune Mike had already written the music so I had to learn the tune on the spot and come up with something for Ruff so as not to look like a complete non-session cat. Opting to forgo learning the chords right at that moment I just figured out the bass notes of the chords and went for two-note riffs for atmosphere, with occasional use of the whammy bar, as Ruffs fine keyboard work had the groove covered and then some. Next came the backing vocals with the both of us singing. We pretty much plucked the backing vocals right out of the air with Mike directing, and singing it once or twice max. Neither Mike or I owned fancy mic's, compressors, pre-amps or powerful recording rig's at the time, we were just using what was available and went for it.

Lost In Your Touch

words - Allan Thomas
music - Michael Ruff

Let our bodies do the talking
Lips and fingers be our guide
No second thoughts or mixed emotions
No fantasy denied
Free from time and mind
Losing all composure

I feel a river of passion
And the currents too much
I get swept away
Lost in your touch

Like a scene you see in a movie
Steamy music and candlelight
Making love like it's the first time
Fat chance we'll forget this night
Oblivion and ecstasy
Coming to our senses

And there's a river of passion
If I let go enough
I get swept away
I get lost in your touch

Lets not think about tomorrow
or worry about the past
There's nothing but this moment
And the desire to make it last

This river of passion
This ocean of love
I get swept away baby
I get lost in your touch

Took a long hard look at the big picture
Talkin' story to my soul
And I saw this thread of sadness there
Just running through us all

Maybe that's why I'd like to get lost in your touch
Maybe that's why I wanna be lost in your touch
