about

About the song:

Chris Templeton, a brilliant and eccentric lap-steel player, inventor and songwriter lived on Kauai in the mid 80's. He had already written most of the music for this song when he first played it for me. I twisted his arm into letting me write some lyrics to the tune because it jumped right out at me and said "write me".

I fancied a girl who worked at Fred's Hanalei Pizza for a brief moment in time, so the inspiration was readily at hand. She didn't even know I existed and for a change that was fine by me, as it was one of those rare times I decided to just not go there. To leave well enough alone. To just imagine what it might be like to be her lover, without ruining the whole thing with something like reality.

About the recording:

Chris and I took a flight over to Oahu to record at Bryan Kessler's home studio. The recording interface was the same rig Bryan used on 'Soldier of Misfortune', a quarter-inch reel to reel Tascam 8-track. We pretty much plugged everything in direct and went for it with all of us playing at once. It sounds like it too, in that as before we didn't watch the levels too closely and just played our hearts out, which resulted in a track with plenty of feel but also some overs on the inputs and very high-endy frequencies here and there. Once again, a tip of the hat to Stephen Barncard for leveling and mellowing some of this near-clipage in his mastering of the Brooklyn Boy collection. On this track I'm playing the Steinberger that you see in the low tide photo.

Love Can Change Your World

words & music - Allan Thomas
music - Chris Templeton

Full moon rising and it's nights like this
When it feels ages since the last good kiss
Well its better to have had love and lost it
Than never have love at all
It's time to let your defenses fall

I could love you if you let me
Make the lonely nights a thing of the past
Love can change your world if you let it
Open up and let the love in

Stealing glimpses of you through the store window
Find myself in line buying things I just don't need
And every move I make in your direction
You take another tack
It's two steps forward and ten steps back

But I could love you if you would let me
Be the one you come to on nights like this
It can change your world if you let it
Just open up and let the love begin

Love can change your world
Open up open up baby

I would love you if you would let me
Make these lonely nights a thing of the past
It can change your whole world if you let it
So open up and let my love in

I could love you if you would let me
Be the one who holds you times like this
Love can change your world if you let it
Just open up let the love begin

Love can change your world
It can can change your world
Love can change the world
Our world baby
