about

The last song I wrote for this second group of sessions was as a simple guitar riff and melody, which I called, ‘Love or Something Like It’. I wanted the title to describe that topsy-turvy state you enter when you fall for somebody hard. It would be the one instrumental track on the record. When I played this riff for the boys in the studio they were super enthused and couldn't wait to lay it down. The track came to life in a spontaneous jazz-like way and was mind-blowingly satisfying, going way beyond my expectations. It just so happened that I had both Michael Ruff and Russell Ferrante - two awesome keyboard players - in the studio for this take.

Besides watching your virgin tune sprout wings and take flight right before your eyes, one of the other high points for me was Judd Miller taking the melody of the chorus with his EWI and creating a Toots Thielemans chromatic harmonica sound, which I am way fond of. Then there is the solo section where both Russ and Mike Ruff trade killer solos.

The title track, and ‘Love Or Something Like It’ received most of the airplay that ‘The Island’ CD would ultimately garner, especially on the Los Angeles radio station KTWV The Wave and sister Wave-type stations around the country at that time.
