about
About the song:
I wrote Making Up For Lost Time in Kalihiwai Valley in 1998, but didn't record it till 2006.
In the last stages of a dear friends journey she kept saying - like so many sages before her - the only thing that makes any sense is to enjoy the present moment, cause that's all you really have. Her words were not forgotten.
Having had a close call myself at age eight, and having spent some time in prison as a young man, I knew this to be true. These things were foremost in my mind when I set out to put words to the tune - this one also in slack key tuning.
After my second and most recent very close call in the middle of recording this CD, I knew this song had to be included, I also understood what the title of the album must be. And as the song Ray Of Hope had done, Making Up For Lost Time meant way more for me now years after writing it, and caused me to feel even stronger in my conviction about living life to the fullest, and pushing myself in all endeavors past any fears of failure, both on land and in the surf. That the outcome doesn't matter as much as being in the game and going for it with everything you have, because you don't get second chances when you leave this sweet world.
About the recording:
After recording my guitar, vocal and precussion parts I invited Kauai resident and stand-out harmonica specialist JP Allen over to leave his mark. As evidenced on this track, the cat can play. Check out JP's out going breath while playing his last note on the very lend of the recording, a happy accident that we had to leave in.
Mike Ruff really locked into this track as always, playing both Hammond B3 and piano. He has a way of walking the line between and jazz and blues that fits the song so well. Mike gave me the idea to extend the song through edits so I could include both piano and hamonica solos. I also added a false ending after which the players could go out jamming.
Bassist Jimmy Johnson kills it on this track as does drummer Tris Imboden - the perfect locking together of bass and drum for a solid yet fluid foundation for the song. Mr. Bryan Kessler was good enough to fly to Kauai to add his stunning rhythm guitar parts, which are heard on the right side, while my Steinberger electric rhythm part is found on the left.
On this record I had just started experimenting with editing small guitar or keyboard parts and reversing them - much as George Martin had done on early Beatles records - so it was fun to discover what those guys were inventing some forty-five years ago and use it now.
I never try to envision what a song will sound like after it is recorded - it's so much better to watch it change and morph with every added player, and become whatever it becomes. This way is much more surprising and ultimately satisfiying for me.
lyrics
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
words & music - Allan Thomas
IT’S NOT ALWAYS A WALK IN THE PARK
NOT ALWAYS SMOOTH SAILING
YOU TRY TO CLAW YOUR WAY OUT OF THE DARK
WHICH SEEMS TO LAST FOREVER
I THINK I MIGHT HAVE MISSED
SOME STOPS ALONG THE WAY
FORGOT TO SMELL THE ROSES
I WANT TO MAKE IT UP RIGHT NOW
WHILE THE WORLD IS SLEEPING
I’M MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
SEEMS I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A LATE BLOOMER
ONE BEAT BEHIND
BUT LIKE THE TORTOISE IN THAT FABLE
I’M GONNA CROSS THAT FINISH LINE
WHATS THE POINT IN GOING FROM A TO B
IF YOU DON’T SEE THE SCENERY
I WANNA MAKE IT UP AND THEN SOME
WHILE THE WORLD IS SLEEPING
I’M MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
I WALK THE MOON SHADOWS WHILE YOU DREAM
DON’T WANT TO MISS A THING
YOUTH IS MOMENTARY SOON COME GRAY
FOLLOWING LIKE A SHADOW
BEFORE YOU KNOW IT YOU GET CARRIED AWAY
JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD A CLUE
THINGS THAT ONCE WERE OH SO SERIOUS BEFORE
NOW TAKE ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING
I WANT TO MAKE IT UP IN SPADES
MAKE SOME MEMORIES WORTH KEEPING
WHILE THE WORLD IS SLEEPING
I’M MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
LIVING MY LIFE TO THE MAXIMUM
DROPPING IN ON THE BIG ONE
LAYING IT ON THE LINE
I’M MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME
