about

'Nine to Five Routine', a slow blues in A minor, opened the album and was my declaration of independence and sort of a blueprint for the future. I'd decided that I'd never work normal hours again, and just spend my time working on my craft. The tune was written in Central Park, where I was prone to write from time to time. My vocal and Gurian jumbo acoustic guitar were recorded live with the band. Nice Fender Strat guitar solo from Jack on the left, and even a bass solo for Steve who was probably all nineteen years old at the time.

Turns out for the most part I followed that blueprint through thick and thin - probably why I am so dang thin too.

Nine To Five Routine

words & music - Allan Thomas

I've quit that nine to five routine
Ain't gonna work that way no more
Devoting my time to creatin' me
And I don't care how long I've got to be poor

Now working five days a week that don't allow me
The time I need to grow
I'll sacrifice the security for a future I can call my own

I ain't gonna follow no one else's footsteps but mine
I got to make my own way
Taking my time
Skeptical people they say I'll be a nobody
They scorn me and say I'm a fool
But knowing my decision is right
Means more to me than following the rule
I've quit that nine to five routine

Now I'm not saying that nine to five ain't no good
For some folk it's all they've got
But what may be good for someone else
Perhaps for me is not for
I've quit that nine to five routine
You can bear my witness
I've quit that nine to five routine
