about

Bryan Kessler and I wrote the chords and melody in a few non-stop songwriting sessions on Oahu. We had, and still have, have a tendency to work at our co-writing or recording till we literally fall off our feet. We'd go at it for days on end, often becoming slightly delerious afterward. But in the end we always had something to show for it. I wrote the lyrics back on Kauai, which was the usual deal when Bryan and I co-wrote together.

Hawaiian songwriters have always written songs about different places in the Islands, so I decided to give it a shot. The word images came easily when I starting considering all that Kauai is. Couple that with my vast love of the place and you have some major inspiration.

I remember recording the vocals at Cherokee Studios with Barncard at the recording console. It was one of the smallest recording rooms at the studio, but it didn't matter to me, small room, big room, all I cared about was the smoking track I was had to sing on, and it was done in no more than three takes.

Stephen Barncard filmed a music video of 'The Island' on Kauai in 1989 and re-edited and released it in March of 2009

THE ISLAND

words and music - Allan Thomas

music - Bryan Kessler

Early Morning Golden Sunrise

Fishermen On the Shore

Something 'Bout This Kinda Life

You Love It More and More
You Live Like There's No Tomorrow

On The Island

You See Double Rainbows
 Multi-Colored Skies

On The Island

Walking Beside A River Ginger And Bamboo

Thinkin 'Bout The Vast Pacific
And How It Surrounds You

Nowhere Else On Earth
 I Would Rather Be

Than On The Island

Waves, Waterfalls
 You Never Forget
The Island

Mongoose, Mango, Coconut Tree

Fresh Fish From The Ocean
Man That's The Life For Me

Ever Changing Weather
 Constant Sound Of Sea

Meeting The Island

And When It Rains
It's Like Percussion On Tin Roof

On The Island

There's At Least A Million Things
You And I Could Do
You Could Catch The Plane At Dawn

Baby I'd Come Meet You

We Could Leave Our Differences

Stranded At The Gate
 Of The Island

We Could Lose Ourselves
 In The Earthly Paradise

Of The Island
