about

I had been working with a groove on my guitar in another David Crosby alternate tuning, and had an idea for a title called ‘Everyone Gets The Blues’. About how no matter how much money or power you have, you can still be subject to the blues, just like everyone else. I didn’t have any lyrics and thought it would be nice to write another song with my bro Michael Ruff.

I went over to his house in Hanalei and played him the idea. He got right into it with me, and within a few hours we had the main body of the lyrics to the song. The next day we polished it off and ended up calling it ‘Everybody Gets The Blues’.

Ruff is a very gifted songwriter who has had songs recorded by Bonnie Riatt, David Sandborn, Roberta Flack, and many others. His live band performances are legend in L.A. and Europe, and among many top musicians Mike is highly respected as a dynamic keyboard player and singer. Today he writes, produces, and records himself and other artists in his Kauai home studio.

I'm playing the Collings OM3 acoustic on the left, and singing the chorus and pre-chorus in two parts an octave apart.

A tip of the hat to the Beatles "Good Day Sunshine" in the bridge "one day sunshine next day rain come down" lines.

lyrics

Everybody Gets the Blues

words & music Allan Thomas & Michael Ruff

Walkin' down a road
drivin' in your car
no matter where you go
it's never very far
you can't run away
from the road you choose
everybody gets the blues

might be feeling
ten feet tall
even humpty dumpty
took a little fall
here comes the rug
from under your shoes
everybody gets the blues

I'm gonna tell you
how it's gonna be
blues are gonna come for you
then their comin' for me
some gonna win
some gonna lose
everybody gets the blues

I've been up
I've been around
I've seen love and money
come tumbling down
it's gonna happen
no matter what you do
everybody gets the blues

I'm gonna tell you
how it's gonna be
blues gonna come for you
then their coming for me
sometimes you win
sometimes you lose
everybody gets the blue

one day sunshine
next day rain come down
whether your rich or poor
no matter who you are
everyone gets the blues

theres one thing
you can be sure
come one mornin'
there'll be a knockin' on the door
open up baby
say how do you do
everybody gets the blues

I'm gonna tell you
how it's gonna be
blues are gonna come for you
then their coming for me
might as well face it
what else can you do
everybody gets the blues
everybody gets the blues

whether your rich or poor
no matter who you are
everyone gets the blues
