about
Sitting in my van watching the waves roll in one fine Kauai afternoon I thought about the many ways love can be so mysterious and unpredictable. How you can't control it or buy it or demand it. How it comes to you or it doesn't, and how it seems to have a will of its own, and even if you're deeply immersed in it, still, things can change with absolutely no guarantees. The picture can get infinitely better...or worse! So contemplating such truths I began writing what presented itself to me, quickly, while the fire was hot. After an hour or so I had the gist of what I felt could be the basis for a song.
After tightening up the budding lyric up over the next couple of days I sent them to my life-long buddy and musical collaborator Bryan Kessler, on Oahu, to see if he was inspired to write a melody and music for it. Luckily he was, and within a week he sent me a demo replete with drums, keyboards, guitars, bass and a rough vocal. We'd been on a roll recently with me sending him lyrics and him writing the music for them. We've been collaborating since 1972 and lately I'd been churning out lyrics and instead of taking the time to write the music for them I passed them to Bryan or Michael Ruff - another longtime collaborator - to add their musical ideas. It's a very different way of working for me as I usually have a hand in the melody and music, but if felt good to try something different on this album and I'm really happy I did. The pace of the new songs was flying in at an unprecedented rate of speed, and production of the recordings was equally swift as the pandemic meant all my recording partners were not on the road and were in their home studios with ample time to record their amazing parts for these new songs. It usually takes more than several years for me to complete a new album but this one was racing to be finished so I just went with it.
Always planning to replace the temporary demo parts I first enlisted excellent keyboard man and singer songwriter James Raymond (Crosby Stills and Nash) to play keyboards and he did not disappoint. Relying on Jimmy Johnson (James Taylor, Elton John) to add his always deep-in-the-pocket bass parts, as he has done on my last 4 albums, I sent the tracks to him next and bingo they came back mind-blowingly right on the money as always. Bryan and I agreed this song might be perfect for new AT guitar recording sideman extraordinaire, Michael Landau (Joni Mitchell, Michael McDonald, Randy Newman) who after hearing the demo was keen to add his tasteful touch and did he ever! Next up I sent the tracks to Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, Sting) for his groovaciously solid and downright deep drum contribution. After receiving his parts and dropping them in the session, besides being utterly beyond happy, I thought now all we need next is backing vocals. I enlisted Amanda Frazier, on Oahu, who sang some sweet backups on 'The Dating Game' on the 'Two Sides To Every Story' album. She could drop by her island's great engineer Dave Tucciarone, and in his studio record her parts. I knew between her and Dave the song would be in good hands. And was it ever.
I mixed the now complete song as close as I could get to what I wanted to hear then sent the tracks to my longtime friend and mix master Paul Northfield (Rush, Roberta Flack, Wilson Pickett) in Montreal, to add the final sheen and shine, and sat back and waited for his take on the mix. After a few back and forth's 'Love's Way' was ready for her debut - the 10th single from my up and coming 7th album 'The Journey' - and here she is. Enjoy...

V1- You can’t purchase love it’s a gift freely given
Makes no difference if your lazy or driven
No matter if you’re rich or poor
It’s the only thing worth asking for
CH1- Loves way loves way
Always has the last say
Not up to you it will leave or stay
That’s the mystery of love
V2- Your lucky if it finds you unlucky if it don’t
But you don’t have a say if it will or it won’t
And when it’s gone you can’t get it back
Like a runaway race car knocked off the track
CH2- Loves way loves way
Hope it lasts another day
You can’t make it change or mold it like clay
That’s the mystery of loves way
V3- There’s no saying how long it will last
It’s fluid and unpredictable no future no past
You may wish to extend it till your dying day
But it’s not in your power whether you cry beg or pray
CH3- Loves way loves way
Always has the last say
Not up to you it will leave or stay
That’s the mystery of love
Bridge - It’s an unsolved mystery a real life thriller
A stunning victory or a dream killer
V4- Celebrate if you’re under its sway
And if not there’s always another day
But there’s one thing you must understand
Win or lose it’s not in your hands
CH4- Loves way loves way
Hope it lasts another day
Not up to you be that as it may
That’s the secret of love
CH5- Loves way loves way
Always has the last say
Not up to you it will leave or stay
That’s the mystery of love

Waiting For Love is my least favorite because it's a cover...The rest of the songs are perfectly written, produced and recorded! I think this is their best album of all. Cyriel van Kappel aka Cy Vanka
