about

My sometime co-writer Ed Haaker and I were mulling over ideas and titles for our next collaboration in a series of co-writes we were engaged in through 2019-2020, and I suggested ‘So Far So Good’ as a title for something I’d been thinking a lot about lately whenever friends would ask how was I doing regarding life at present. The title referred to still being above ground, not yet infected with the scourge of COVID-19, and in love, of all things, with a sweet and beautiful writer from the Netherlands. Ed and I started with the lyrics first and due to his busy schedule after helping me get started I took over and finished it. We had been on a roll with my longtime best buddy and musical collaborator on Oahu, Bryan Kessler, writing the melody and music for several of our latest songs so once again we enlisted Mr Kessler for his boundless expertise in this area. He was inspired by the lyrics to come up with the music and I was beyond excited by his contribution. After Bryan recorded the demo parts and his keeper guitar parts we then had James Raymond, Russell Ferrante (who has recorded tracks for me since ‘The Island’ album in 1988) add their stellar pads and piano parts followed by master bassist Jimmy Johnson and Steely Dan drummer Keith Carlock.

Next up came my old friend and mixer Paul Northfield who mixed the track in Montreal with several back and forth’s with yours truly to get it just right.

I couldn’t be happier with the result and am honored and overjoyed to have the participation of these beautiful and soulful cats on yet another AT release.

Words Allan Thomas - Ed Haaker - Bryan Kessler
Music Bryan Kessler

Woke up to the morning sun
Brewed a cup the day had begun
Snow capped peaks were glistening
Winter melting into spring
Tried to figure out where I stood
We’re never quite out of the woods so far so good

You can’t predict the future yet to be written
It’s a ball of confusion from where I’m sitting
Whatever the case it must be understood
If you’re still above ground so far so good

The only thing you can count on the unexpected
It’s a miracle in itself to remain unaffected
Saying a prayer for us gonna touch wood
Fingers crossed so far so good

I feel like I'm sheltered under a great umbrella
Avoiding catastrophe one lucky fella
Don’t sweat the small stuff this ain’t Hollywood
One breath at a time so far so good

The only thing you can count on things will change
No one can claim the credit no one can take the blame
Saying a prayer for us gotta touch wood
Fingers crossed so far so good
So far so good
